From "The Civil War, Record of Union and Confederate Army," Series 1, Volume 31, page 561.

The 45th fought in the battle of Paintsville (KY) April 13, 1864, led by Major Nathan Brown.
"We were attacked by 1000 rebels. I have no fear for the results here if the 45th or other regiments are near by and could come by the Salyersville road toward Pound Gap and get in their rear. - Col George Gallup, 14th Kentucky Infantry Division, Commanding District of Eastern KY.

[note: there is a long letter written by Col. Thomas Johnson reporting on the battle of Puncheon Creek, Magoffin Co. KY, in which the 45th fought. The book is too fragile to photocopy. I will make a hand written copy at a later date, J.Lewin]
