    1. [S934] AA: Conclusion - Name/Relationship, (Date posted to database 3 Sep 2015).
The following document(s) are used for the conclusion that John Rakes is the birth name and that his parents were William Rakes and unknown mother. Currently there is no documentation to show the mother of John Rakes.

      Birth Name:
In all of the documents that I have found all of them use the name John Rakes. In the 1850 Marion County census where John is listed with his son William and daughter Mary (Polly) it indicates that John cannot read or write. Many individuals who cannot read or write can still spell or recognize the spelling of their name.

Other's names have been used such as Johnny Rakes, John Carter Rakes, and the spelling of his last name as Raikes but none are able to supply a source of these names. Some of John's descendants changed the spelling of their name to Raikes but this would not have changed John's birth name.

      Parents:
John father, William Rakes, comes from a tax record showing John's 75.75 acres of land was derived from his father (1813 Land Tax). It does not list his father by name. This is the first appearance of John Rakes on the land tax rolls. It's a pity that we aren't told explicitly who his father is, but the fact that (next year) his land is shown to be on Walton's Fork, adjacent to the land of William Rakes, is strong circumstantial evidence that William is his father.

This is the best I can do with the transcript using a text editor. The marryd is actually marry with a superscript of d. Also there is a note on the left side of the document indicating grandchildren which I can not reproduce in this text editor.

    86. [S490] AA: Note, (posted to db on 15 October 2012).
There is no document showing the burial of John Rakes. The was known as Pioneer Cemetery. The cemetery is located outside of Bradfordsville on route 49 towards the town of Liberty by building used as a church/school/residence. This cemetery seems to be lost except for family who know about it. Paul Tungate in his book listed this as the place of burial but indicated he did not know where it was located but that it must be close to Bradfordsville.

[This cemetery has been known by the name of Pioneer Cemetery. The building on this property has been a church, school, and residence. My wife visited this cemetery and found that all of the stones had been removed and placed into a pile on the back of the property close to a small stream. We latter visited this cemetery and found that the stones were now completely gone and nothing remains except as open field used for farming.]

The name of John Rakes Sr is shown in the death record of his son John Rakes Jr.

[I am not sure that John Rakes Sr. was ever used in John's lifetime. Maybe it was just used to separate the generations to avoid confusion?]

This alternate name may have been used as a nickname but I can not find any record using this name.

    102. [S997] AA: Conclusion - Marriage, (Date posted to database 3 Sep 2015).
The following document(s) are used for the conclusion that John Rakes and Nancy Saunders were married about 1802 in Buckingham County, Virginia, United States.

The marriage is documented in the Chancery Court case which started in Oct 1830 and ended 1850. The court records document that Nancy Saunders the daughter of Zach Saunders and Jane Radford married John Rakes. This court document does not give a date or place of marriage.

      Marriage Date:
I have set the marriage date between John Rakes and Nancy Saunders as about 1802. This calculation is based on them being married 1 year prior to the birth of their first child, John Rakes Jr who's date of birth is found on his death record as 16 March 1803.

      Marriage Location:
The parents of John and Nancy were living in Buckingham County, Virginia, United States and I list this as the place of marriage. The parents of both John and Nancy are listed in the tax records of Buckingham County, Virginia during this time period.

There are some who think John Rakes was married more than once. In my looking at all of the documents that I have I do not see and indication of multi marriages. There is a gap in the birth of children but this could be just the fact that we do not know the birth dates of most of the children. It could be because of his service in the war of 1812 and his move to Kentucky. The change of age of the oldest female in the 1840 census is from Nancy's death and the oldest female then being his oldest daughter, Elizabeth, who is still at home.

If the parents of John Rakes Jr, the oldest son, were John and Nancy and the parents of Mary Rakes the, youngest daughter, then John and Nancy would have to separate and then marry again.
