THOMAS WILLIAMS, the eldest son of Daniel and Mary (Jackson) Williams, was born in Falmouth, Virginia, Feb. 25, 1777 and immigrated with his parents to Kentucky. He was a successful school teacher, also farmer. December 31, 1801, in Pendleton County, Ky., he married Miss Nancy Sanders, (some- times written Saunders), born in Yadkin County, North Carolina, March 11th, 1784. She was a daughter of John and Sallie (Grant) Sanders and her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Grant, was a sister of the famous Kentucky hunter and pioneer, Daniel Boone. In 1840, when advanced in years, Thomas removed with his family to Livingston County, Missouri, where he died, March 30, 1845, and his wife about two years later, Feb. 9, 1847. Their children, who lived to be grown, were: Angelina; Rev. Joel Grant, (a Baptist minister); Dr. James Tully; Daniel Boone; Dr. John S; Dr. Thomas J.; Zerah Grant; Lycurgus; Musidora; and Stanishlaus; and Clementina; Elijah; Melcena; Sarah; and Nancy, who died when young.

    5. [S490] AA: Note, (Date posted to database 3 Sep 2015).
Some have speculated that the connection between Nancy Sanders and the Boone line was independently discovered by several different researchers in several different locations of the United States.

If you look at the Family Group Sheet for the temple work for this family it clearly shows that this incorrect link to the Boone line was known before February 14, 1905, as that is the date of the first temple work, and the Family Group Sheet shows Nancy Sanders being the daughter of John Sanders and Sarah Grant.

I feel that the incorrect parents of Nancy Sanders was found by one person and then spread to the rest of the family.

    6. [S995] AA: Relationship - Birth, (Date posted to database 3 Sep 2015).
The following document(s) are used for the conclusion that Nancy Saunders was born about 1785 at Buckingham County, Virginia, United States.

      Birth Date:
1820 Census of John Rakes show the oldest female as 45+ (1775-)
1830 Census of John Rakes show the oldest female as 40-49 (1781-1790)
If you use the calculated date of marriage as 1802 and females marring about the age of 21 (1781)
If you look at the birth of her mother Jane Radford then 1785 seems to fit.

      Birth Location:
Nancy's birth place is based on the residence of her parents shown by the tax records of Buckingham County, Virginia.

Rhoda Saunders was living in Christian County, Ky. with Nancy Agee Radford, widow of Benjamin Radford, when the Federal Census was taken in Jul, 1860 one day before Nancy Agee Radford died. She must have moved to the next farm and lived with Jane Radford Garrett as she died Oct. 29, 1871 aged 82 years and was buried in the Isaac Garrett family cemetery on the place.(dates from her tombstone) JWJ.

    9. [S996] AA: Conclusion - Death, (Date posted to database 3 Sep 2015).
The following document(s) are used for the conclusion that Nancy Saunders died between 1830 and 1840 at Marion County, Kentucky, United States.

      Death Date:
John's wife is shown as the oldest female in the 1820 and the 1830 Washington County, Kentucky Census. In the 1840 Census of John Rakes the oldest female is younger than Nancy should be. I think that the oldest female in the 1840 Census is John's and Nancy's oldest daughter Elizabeth. Elizabeth is not married at this time. This indicates that Nancy died sometime between the 1830 and 1840 Census.
At the start of the 1830 Court Case it appears that Nancy is still living. If not her part of the settlement would have gone to her children.

      Death Location:
I have used the place of residence of John Rakes as the death location for Nancy.

This is the best I can do with the transcript using a text editor. The marryd is actually marry with a superscript of d. Also there is a note on the left side of the document indicating grandchildren which I can not reproduce in this text editor.

    13. [S997] AA: Conclusion - Marriage, (Date posted to database 3 Sep 2015).
The following document(s) are used for the conclusion that Zachariah and Jane Radford were married about 1784 at Buckingham County, Virginia, United States. This would be Zachariah's first marriage.

      Marriage Date:
The court case Oct 1830 shows that Zach and Jane were married but does not give a date or place.
The date of Zachariah's first marriage to Jane is about 1784 based on 1 year before the birth of their first child Nancy.

      Marriage Location:
The marriage location is based on the residence of Zachariah. He is shown as paying taxes in 1784 in Buckingham County, Virginia.

    14. [S997] AA: Conclusion - Marriage, (Date posted to database 3 Sep 2015).
The following document(s) are used for the conclusion that John Rakes and Nancy Saunders were married about 1802 in Buckingham County, Virginia, United States.

The marriage is documented in the Chancery Court case which started in Oct 1830 and ended 1850. The court records document that Nancy Saunders the daughter of Zach Saunders and Jane Radford married John Rakes. This court document does not give a date or place of marriage.

      Marriage Date:
I have set the marriage date between John Rakes and Nancy Saunders as about 1802. This calculation is based on them being married 1 year prior to the birth of their first child, John Rakes Jr who's date of birth is found on his death record as 16 March 1803.

      Marriage Location:
The parents of John and Nancy were living in Buckingham County, Virginia, United States and I list this as the place of marriage. The parents of both John, William Rakes, and Nancy, Zachariah Sanders, are listed in the 1783 tax records of Buckingham County, Virginia during this time period.

There are some who think John Rakes was married more than once. In my looking at all of the documents that I have I do not see and indication of multi marriages. There is a gap in the birth of children but this could be just the fact that we do not know the birth dates of most of the children. It could be because of his service in the war of 1812 and his move to Kentucky. The change of age of the oldest female in the 1840 census is from Nancy's death and the oldest female then being his oldest daughter, Elizabeth, who is still at home.

If the parents of John Rakes Jr, the oldest son, were John and Nancy and the parents of Mary Rakes the, youngest daughter, then John and Nancy would have to separate and then marry again.
